week 6 A busy week and good news

This week was another tough week where I upped my distance again.
MONDAY
Plan rest day
Today passed really quickly. A busy day at work meant I never missed exercise at all today.I am starting to look forward to rest days.

TUESDAY
Plan 5.5 miles easy run.
I wanted to add a bike to todays plan but when the alarm went off at 5 am I was tired so I re set it for 6am and went back to sleep. That is virtually unheard of. Glad I did though. Today has been hectic and I didnt get home till nearly 5 pm and rushed in got changed and rushed out with the dog.. It was like he knew I was in a rush and as really hanging on to go to the loo. When he finally went, we ran home and fed him the straihht out to running club, lucozade and chunky kitkat in hand. I ran eating my kitkat and was 10 mins late. Thank goodness the other coaches were on time. Juniors did a relay for training.
After the youngsters left it was adult club. My group joined with another similar paced group. It was a bit fast for me at first but I settled in and it was a good run.
Total
run 6 miles

WEDNESDAY
Plan 45 min bike 15 min hard
I was on a course for work at Boroughbridge, 6 miles away, this was the perfect opportunity for a training ride. The weather was cool and clear and I went a slightly longer route, relishing in the opportunity to ride to work.
After the course the sun had come out and it was lovely and warm riding home, I rode home faster to incorporate the 15 min hard part of the plan.
Plan Swim 85 lengths
After tea it was time for a quick swim before Drama, this session needs to be quick because swim starts at 6 pm and drama at 7 pm, I am always late to drama. Didn't think Id manage the distance and I was wrong, Only managed 86 because it always ends up as an even number.
At drama the youngsters were having their dress rehearsals for the annual drama competition, where they write, direct and design plays in groups. this year all 3 plays are very good . Its going to be difficult for the judges next week
TOTALS
Bike 15.4 miles
swim 1.14 miles

THURSDAY
Plan Club training run
I decided on a morning cycle to try and improve my cycling. it was pretty chilly but it was a nice ride. When I got home I put my bike back upstairs, changed my shoes and took Jed out for a Dogjog, only a short one, 2 miles but it was good. Jed enjoyed it too.
6:30 pm was club training, 12 min efforts running up Whitcliffe lane for 6 mins, turning and running back. I struggled with the warm up but then about 3 mins into the first effort something clicked and suddenly I was running fast, way faster than normal, and the following 2 efforts were amazing, I was running hard and fast it was good fun.
TOTALS
Bike 14.2 miles
run 8.86

FRIDAY
Plan easy 45 min bike
Got up early and got out on the bike. Again it was cold and bright, when I got home my toes were freezing. went a little bit further but it was windy so quite hard work.
Plan swim training
It was a timed mile this week. Its a long time since I did this, and last time I never finished before the trainer stopped us. this week I completed it and in 35 mins, my fastest ever mile, we then did a few drills.
TOTALS
Bike 14.47 miles
Swim 1.2 miles

SATURDAY
Long bike 50 miles
No work but no lie in either. I went out to complete the 3 laps of the Ripon tri bike route, which I had failed at last week.
It was not windy, just breezy, this week the weather was cold and damp with frequent rain stops. I was soaked through. It would have been easy to give up but I pushed onwards completing my longest ride to date.
TOTALS Bike 80.80 miles

SUNDAY
Plan long run 20 miles
Legs were tired from the start so I set of with doubt in my mind. I decided to do a combination of hills and off road to keep it interesting. it was cold and bright and hard work. I talked myself into the full 20 miles,
TOTAL 20.23 miles.

SUMMARY
Yet again a tough week but next week is recovery again. I did have good news on Friday but was told to keep it secret until this morning. I will be carrying the Olympic torch through Ripon on 19 June. I am so pleased and have somany messages wishing me well. I am very honoured to be able to carry the Olympic flame.

Week 5, Behind this great woman is a better man

I'm starting to feel the training now, there are bits of me that I am constantly aware of, not sore exactly but that glow you get when you've worked hard, thing is it never goes away any more. Its hard to balance everything and please everyone. I really could not possibly do this without my husband Billy, he supports me with training tips, giving up some of his weekend plans, keeping on top of the housework , doing the shopping and the cooking. He is a star and I am very grateful. Billy is doing the Stokesley Duathlon at the end of the month, he'll beat me but hey ho that's the way it goes. Its his first Duathlon, he is also training for his first triathlon, The Black Sheep which I did last year. He manages his training, whilst holding down a full time job that keeps him away from home most of the week and supporting me. He is amazing. Also the rest of my family who keep up the hospital visits so that Mum does not feel abandoned, keeping me up to date with her progress since her brain haemorrhage/stroke on Dec27 Thank you.
My week last week started really well.

MONDAY
Plan Rest day
I used to be fidgety on rest days but not any more. I don't like to follow a long run with a rest day, I prefer to do a little something, It seems to speed recovery but after last week I decided I needed to have proper rest days if I don't want to burn out. This week I enjoyed my rest day.

TUESDAY
Plan Easy run 5 miles
I wanted to get to grips with cycling so as I was up early, I walked the dog early and got a cycle in. The roads were very gritty so I went on the old cronk and did 10.39 miles, not fast only 10.9 mph still I got it done.
After work it was the usual rush to get home, walk the dog and get down to club for the junior runners. Both groups did quite a hilly route, my group took a shorter route home but still managed 3 miles, really proud of them. It was nice running in daylight.
Next it was Adults, there were 7 in my group this week we did 7 miles at a reasonable pace with only a couple of walks, it was a good run of 7 miles
TOTALS
Cycle 10.39 miles
Run 10 miles

WEDNESDAY
Plan Bike Interval session 40 mins with 6x20sec sprints
Endurance swim 70 lengths
I got up and it had been pouring down all night and it was blowing a gale and I couldn't be bothered to rig Tessie back up to the turbo so I wimped out of the bike ride. I just walked the dog.
Wednesday is school running club day, the day turned out nice after such an awful start so we decided to run up to Studley, the youngsters were full of energy so we took them up the main drag to the Church, first up was to touch the gate and come back and as he passed people they had to turn and run back too. they were great the one who got there first managed the whole mile without stopping and one other never walked either. all the students put in a fantastic effort I was really proud of them all. $ miles done.
I got home in time to walk the dog and to make an omelette and eat it before the 6pm swim. The swim went well, the pool was quite quiet and I was soon into my rhythm I managed 62 lengths before I had to get out and go to drama.
TOTALS
Bike 0
Run 4 miles
Swim 0.88 miles

THURSDAY
Plan Club training run
Feeling guilty about the previous day's bike, I decided to get up early, walk the dog and have a bike ride. The weather was better and it was getting lighter so I didn't need lights. I did a couple of hills focusing on sitting more and driving with my quads rather than standing. It was a pleasant ride of 11.41 miles.
After work I got home and Billy had just got in, he took the dog out while I made tea, Spaghetti bolognaise (quick and filling) Then it was off to running club for training. Ian said it was a surprise, we ran to the canal and then ran a figure of eight of efforts around the canal, it was hard. the first loop from the roundabout past the Navvi and down Dallamires was A long effort with a jog under the under pass and hard and fast on the shorter route around the white bridge. we only had time for two sets then it was back to club. 5 miles in all.
TOTALS
Bike 11.41 miles
Run 5.03 miles

FRIDAY
Plan Easy bike 45 min
Swim training
I got up and Billy took the dog out so I could get straight out on the bike. I did a similar route to Thursday, again concentrating on sitting more the weather was fine but a little breezy. 11.66 miles completed.
Fridays are another rush day and this was more so than usual, My eldest son was 23 on Wednesday so he was coming home for the weekend. Swim training was first though, so rush home from work collect my stuff and be at the grammar school for 17:15. billy does this training too. We are both similar speeds in the pool and are in the same lane (slow lane).
I set of first and for the whole session Billy was on my feet, it does not freak me out when someone touches my feet any more, but I do put my leg kick to good use to pull away. Towards the end of the session I was shattered, Billy offered to take the lead, but I'd started so I'd finish. Next week I might draft off him.
We got home and got changed and our son and his girlfriend arrived, we were happily in the kitchen consuming home-brew red wine, when Billy said it was time to go out for dinner, we went to the Dragon Inn on the Market Place, luckily the potions were huge, swimming always makes me starving and rehydrating on red wine is never a good idea, so I had cider with my meal. After the meal we had a couple more drinks and Billy told me he had decided to join Vicky, Annette and I in running the Dublin Marathon in October. I was so proud.
TOTALS
Bike 11.66 miles
Swim 1.2 miles

SATURDAY
Plan long bike 60 miles
I decided a fortnight ago when I did 2 and a bit laps of the Ripon Tri cycle route that I would go for 3 laps, I set of a 06:20 after 4 hours sleep, leaving Billy to walk the dog. it was really windy, I hoped it would settle. I set off steady, the roads were quiet and apart from the wind it was a lovely morning. it was going quite well until I got on the A168 the wind was awful, it was not enjoyable at all and the Boroughbridge road was horrendous, head on winds and the traffic was getting busier. On the second lap it was no better and I was tiring so I cut off the Boroughbridge road and went through Skelton-on-Ure The wind was still bad but the traffic was lighter but the road surface was dreadful, still it was the lesser of two evils. The third lap started OK but as I approached Staveley and the 60 mile point i was starting to hurt and as I approached the A168 I decided not to do the Dishforth or Kirby Hill sections I was too tired, Again I detoured through Skelton-on-Ure. Then it was home changed food and time to visit Mum. She was pleased to see us as always.
TOTAL
Bike 72.02 miles

SUNDAY
Plan Run 15 miles
I slept 7 hours so was feeling a bit better, a little ache in my back and quads but nothing too bad. Again billy walked the dog so I headed for Studley to tackle the hill, 5 laps should do it. I stashed my bottle and set off, the first lap was OK didn't hurt too bad on the second I paid for being too hydrated and had to detour to the loos, by the third lap I was warming up and my pace was slightly improving, by four I needed a wee, detour to loos needed and on the fifth I was thinking that I saw my weekly miles on Daily Mile as 123 so I figured that as I was at 14 miles it would take 2 to get home, so if I detoured a bit I would get 17 miles and a weekly total of 140, so I did, as I was approaching home I headed up Bishopton on tired legs and up lark hill and made it home in 17.04. I was exhausted I put my legs up the cupboards and recovered. This is a trick Billy taught me. when I have done a hard session lay on your back with your legs up the wall for 10/15 mins. The lactic acid drains into your core to be processed. result, I rarely suffer from DOMS it beats ice baths hands down.
TOTAL
Run 17.04 miles
WEEKLY TOTALS
144 miles (I mis-remembered the mileage)
16.47 hours
13551 calories
11 workouts

SUMMARY
The week started well, and even if I was shattered and never kept exactly to my plan, it finished well too.
I covered Iron distance within the time limit although I should have biked more and run less. It was hard, it took a week to do it, I cannot imagine how it feels to do it all in one go but this was a psychological battle won.
I don't know if my training plan will work I need to train how I feel and I developed this plan from the way that I have trained for marathons in the fast using the same concept of 3 weeks build 1 week step back. I will not know until outlaw if my plan is good enough to get me round or even through training without burning out or getting injured. So far it is working and I feel I am progressing well. Long may it continue, and roll on tomorrow, REST DAY

A couple more stats if you're interested;
in 2012 so far I have covered 950 miles
21 miles swimming
567 miles cycling
362 miles running

Week 4, Recovery week?

This week was recovery week on my plan following last week's 132 miles, I was much in need of a rest, It never came and so there is possibly a need to re evaluate again. here is how the week went;
MONDAY
Plan 40 min bike with 6x20sec sprints plus 50 length swim.
I decided to brick this session and headed for the pool on the old cronk, I then proceeded to do my swim using a nose clip to help reduce my chlorine reaction. I then got back on the bike for a ride around the town. I forgot how hard it was to ride straight after a swim. As soon as I found my bike legs I started the sprints(they are so much harder outside than on the turbo. I think the weekends long sessions were still in my legs.
Totals
0.71 mile swim
8.93 mile cycle
TUESDAY
Plan 5 miles easy run
Tuesday is running club night, Juniors at 17:15 and adult at 18:30. The juniors were training on the field so that meant no running for me only supervising, that was a relief as I was tired.
For Adult club, my group was small and we set off for 6 miles, the pace was quite nice, it was a chatty pace with few stops to regroup, but because it was chatty I ran harder than I thought.
Total
6.88 miles
WEDNESDAY
Plan Rest day.
Wednesday is the school running club day. I have meetings Mon and Thur, Juniors Tue and Swimming on Fri so Wed is the only available night. The weather was gorgeous, it was sunny and dry. I had promised to take the students up to Studley (local Deer Park)on the first available opportunity, so Studley it was. The youngsters really enjoyed it, i had 2 messages from parents saying so. I stayed to the back of the group and ran steady but still felt tired.
Total 4.14 miles
THURSDAY
Plan 40 min run training
Running club was more than 24 hrs from School running club. that would have to count as a rest day.
Ian arrived at club to train us and said he had a different session for us. He led us up to a local quiet road doing warm ups and stretches on route (we must look bizarre). The session was a series of short sprints with tight turns then a longer 500/600 run, we repeated this3 times, then did some more short sprints and turns. My quads and heart and lungs were burning.
Total 5.01 miles
FRIDAY
Plan Swim training
Finished work at 4:45 so getting home and back up to the Grammar school was the usual rush, I hoped it was on this week. I phoned a friend, she said it was.
The session was a series of sprints to follow the warm up, then 10 lengths kicking (I'm good at these) and 10 lengths arms with a medley to finish. I am still pretty pants at Breast stroke, totally rubbish at butterfly and not great at back stroke, still they work some different muscles. I worked really hard on tired legs, result burning quads.

SATURDAY
Plan 10 miles run
http://www.parkrun.org.uk/harrogate/home
A few weeks ago I registered for Parkrun. They have one in Harrogate now. I have not had chance to do one yet. Two friends were going this week so I went too (after a nightmare getting the bar codes, thanks Vicky for doing them for me). We arrived on the Stray and headed for a group of runner who were loitering with intent (of running 5km)soon the run started and my quads were complaining again. The route was 3 laps and it took the first one for me to feel my fingers, halfway round the 2nd I was lapped by the winner (fellow Ripon Runner, Mike Appleton).
i completed the run in 28:39, 32nd lady, 5th in my category and 100th out of 159. not my fastest 5 km but I loved it.
Vicky and Annette were amazing in 65th and 86th positions respectively.
Now to try and work a way to fit Parkrun into my training plan.I was tired, but time for a bath and lunch, then back to Harrogate to visit mum.
Total 3.13 miles
SUNDAY

Plan 40 mile cycle
http://www.trihard.co.uk/Stokesley/stokesleyhome.htm
Today I planned to recce the Stokesley Duathlon route. My hubby and I are entered in this at the end of the month and so decided to go try it out. We got up this morning and it was drizzly but we thought it ok to carry on with our plans. We arrived at Stokesley and it was not much above freezing and pouring down. hubby had a pedal clip issue before we even left the car park. I led us into the town to where the race would start. we decided to do the bike bit first and cycle the run route later. The rain increased making it not a very comfortable ride. We stopped in Hutton Rudby to check the route before descending then ascending the 17% hills. When we started the 2nd loop I told hubby to lead, I was in the same gear and matching my pedalling with his but could not keep up. When I got back to the carpark 3 or 4 mins after him, it was to find him in very cold and unhappy, so we didn't do the run bit, we put some dry clothes on and came home.
Total 21.76 miles.
WEEKLY TOTALS
60 miles
8:14 hrs
6516 calories

SUMMARY This week has been tough, less than half the miles but lots more effort. I need to shift my rest day to Monday. I do need to have a whole day where I dont do any phys at all. I don't want to let the school runners down and feel they deserve better than me been shattered all the time. So tomorrow I pledge not to do any exercise at all.
There are only 118 days to Outlaw now and I am seriously concerned about the bike section. I need to increase my distance and speed up. I will be counting the teeth on my gears and comparing them with hubby's, if they are different I will consider upgrading my gears, to see if changing them will help me.If they are the same, well it is clear that I just need to work harder.
That is another week done, ultimately it was still a massive step towards my goal.
