Week 3 Training. Back to work. 19 weeks to Outlaw

MONDAY
Maximising my day by creating an extra rest day, by not doing any phys till tonight which gives me more than 48 hrs rest
First day back at work for a week. Biggest problem this week will be time vs nutrition. Ok today cos school fed me and hubby was home and had prepped tea.
I rushed home today to get online so thst Lisa from Swimovate could remotely install my poolmate.
That done it was time for phys.

PLAN 40 min bike with 10x20 sec sprint
Did it on the turbo rather than go out in the dark. I must be getting fitter as I was in the hardest gear and my cadence was still 85. Next tine I'm going to increase the resistance on the turbo.

PLAN endurance swim 66 lengths
After turbo went to the pool for the 8 pm session. Hubby came too. I used Poolmate to count he counted. We stopped at about 60 lengths, hubby said it was 60 Poolmate said 52. Went with Poolmate and did 14 more.
Shoulder sore today.
TUESDAY
Plan easy 6 mile run
It was Ripon Runners Juniors where I am an assistant coach at 5:15. This was the usual rush from work home to get changed and walk the dog to get there in time. We did a 3 mile run with the youngsters.
Then was the adult club, Tuesdays are social runs and I am a group leader. My group was quite small this week but we were all similar paced and so did 6 miles.
Total 9 steady miles

WEDNESDAY
Plan Rest day.
Wednesday is the best available day for me to have a rest due to other commitments, this is difficult for me as I run the school running club and therefore often end up running.
We did not go far as time was short this week 2 miles on the streets and 1 mile back on the school field. the youngsters did more on the field.

THURSDAY
Plan Run training
On Monday @sidsidowski was to virtually join me for my bike session but was unable to, so he chose the next activity, he picked a 16 miler on Thursday, I got up early to walk the dog and then do Fridays bike on Thursday, I went out on the old cronk, hammering out a cool 16 miles before work.
Club training was the delightful Landrover Hill. This hill is around a third of a mile long if you go all the way to Wath road end (long rep) warm up was jogging the mile from club to the hill doing dynamic stretches as we jogged. The main session was sprints up the first half of the hill then 3 x long reps and finishing with more shorter sprints, we then jogged back to club

FRIDAY
Plan bike easy 45 mins
I didn't do this as I had cycled 16 miles on Thursday.
Plan Swim training
A rush from work to get home and collect my stuff to walk up to the Grammar School for training. Fortunately hubby was home and had walked the dog. He comes to these sessions too. We walked up to the school to find out that there was no swim as there is a problem with the pool, so as we did before half term we went to Spa Baths instead. I did 54 lengths of the 25 yd pool, 10 of which were breast stroke. I am rubbish at breast stroke. after I finished hubby coached me a bit more on breast stroke. I only want to improve it as I feel embarrassed at how slow I am at training when we do breast stroke. Hubby can breast stroke as fast as I can crawl.

SATURDAY
The big weekend is here. Last week of increased distances before well earned step back week.
Plan 60 mile endurance cycle
The furthest I have ever done on a bike is 52 miles back at the beginning of December so I have been dreading this session. I got up early, hubby walked the dog so I could get it done and back again. It was a lovely day though a bit breezy, at hubby's suggestion I did the Ripon triathlon bike route twice. The hardest bit of the route is to Burton Leonard as your legs haven't warmed up and it is predominantly up hill with a cheeky short sharp hill at the back of the village from then on its a lovely ride, The 168 is a bit boring and breezy. It was very breezy today, in fact it was positively windy and then after struggling up the short sharp incline of Windmill Hill I hit a head on wind so the downhill run back to the racecourse was really difficult it was so windy and it was quite unnerving on such a busy road. I got to the racecourse in under 2 hours and I set off for the repeat circuit.
This time it was much easier getting up to Burton Leonard as my legs were warmed up and i started to make good time even fighting the side winds on the 168 and headwinds on the Boroughbridge Road making the race course in 3 hours 45 but it was only 52 miles so I went back on the Tri route to Bishop Monkton and back.
Fuel Hi 5 energy drink, 1 blackberry and apple nutrigrain bar and 1 snickers.
On my journey I saw 3 red kites and 1 buzzard, plus 3 Trotting horse and carriages. I also saw a campervan with a brilliant slogan on the back;
Adventure before dementure.
Total 61 miles

SUNDAY
Plan 20 long slow miles
Last long session of the week today, 20 miles. I decided that if I ran the 2 miles to Studley I could run up the Mile hill and back 8 times and then run home total 20 miles approx.
I got up early and Hubby walked the dog it was a lovely day as I set off armed with a bottle of water and 8 Dextrose tablets. My legs were tired from the bike ride so I took it slowly. I arrived at Studley, stashed my bottle and set off up the hill.
On the way back down from the top on the first rep I stopped for a few pics, which I stopped the watch for. On the Second rep, I was on the way back down when I met Vicky and Annette out for their Sunday run so I stopped my watch and had a chat then carried on. on the fourth rep I needed the loo so I detoured for the toilets in the carpark, now that is a cheeky little hill from the car park to the main drag. On the sixth rep hubby arrived to join me for the last 3 reps.
This was a really peaceful run, Studley is so beautiful and it was interesting to see how busy it was with walkers runners and cyclists.
On my run I saw Numerous deer,(it is a deer park), lots of pheasant, and a woodpecker.
Total 21 miles

Total training for this week
133 miles
15 hours 50 minutes
12915 calories burned
10 workouts
Next week is a step back week.
I was really pleased to complete this odd challenge that I set myself.

Week 2 Training, 1/2 term

I work in a school so the holidays are a great excuse to get some quality training in every 6 weeks or so. Last weeks training went really well so I had high hopes for this week, what with not having to rush about as much. The week started well, TRI247 ran an article on Meet the Outlaws, featuring me.

Ok here's how the training went;

MONDAY

PLAN Endurance Swim- 55 lengths
Went to the pool for 9 am, but it was adult Learners so I went to do my shopping first.I bought chocs and a card for valentines for my hubby who was about to leave for work (he works away most of the week)I thought I'd put them in the car for a surprise and it was. I set the car alarm off.
At 10am I went for my swim, when I did my plan I had forgotten that odd numbered lengths would leave me at the far end of the pool so I changed to 56 lengths. I was the only one in the pool for about 10 mins, it was wonderful. I crawled through the water for about 20 mins then I checked my Poolmate, 44 lengths it said so I started to count the last few. When I count I count there and back as 1 then double up later. By now there were a few other distractions in the pool and I managed to lose count, and therefore ended up swimming 58 lengths.
PLAN Interval bike 40 min inc 8x 20sec sprint
To save time I went on the turbo so that I could get to the hospital to visit mum.
This sounds such an easy session but it is really hard, or I find it hard. Covered the equivalent of 13.72 miles so happy about that.

TUESDAY
PLAN Easy run 5 miles
Tuesday is Running club day, which means I can rest a bit until 18:30. I spent the day on 36 bus to and from Leeds and visiting mum This is a 6 hour round trip.
I got home from Leeds and took Jed our Border Terrier out for his walk before heading out to running club. There were not as many as usual at club so my group was just 2 others and myself, we had a really nice chilled and chatty run of 6.54 miles.

WEDNESDAY
PLAN Rest
I had booked a meal out with hubby for Saturday night so I thought I'd re jig the plan a bit. As mum was transferred through to Harrogate last night I could cycle through to see her then run on Saturday and have Sunday off.
Plan* Endurance bike 50 miles
I packed a rucksack and wrapped up warm to face the elements for an hour or a few. It was dry but windy so I decided to leave my road bike at home and ride this one
Hubby bought me this bike many years ago, before I had taken up running. It was a cheap bike from motor world and it is really heavy, but it does the job for getting me about in winter.
You forget how good it is to be out and about when you've been stuck inside on the turbo. It was a lovely sunny day and I saw field of reindeer, 3 red kites and some squirrels, the bad bit was the wind, it was blowing a gale making cycling very tiring.

The road was closed between Burton Leonard and Staveley so I went by Skelton on Ure to Boroughbridge and then to Knaresborough to get to Harrogate 16.8 miles in total.
After visiting Mum I set off back and detoured through a few villages on the way home to bring my daily total up to 41,1 miles, a bit short of target but it was getting tough and I needed to be at the Red Triangle Drama group.

THURSDAY
PLAN Running Club Training
I had a sports massage booked in Harrogate at 11:00, I really needed this as my hips and shoulders are giving me a bit of grief.
Libby spent most of the hour on my left shoulder which has been bothering me ever since started swimming and cycling late 2010.
I then visited Mum at the hospital she is improving from the brain haemorrhage slowly, but its still improvement.
Because Libby had spent so long on my upper body I felt it was ok to push myself a bit at training.
Ian our coach led us all around the houses, literally on an interval session that covered 5.1 miles.

FRIDAY

PLAN Easy bike 45 mins
Decided to get this done before I went for my swim, and to do the missing 9 miles from Wednesdays bike. Quite a good session, done on the turbo totalling 24.23 miles.

PLAN Endurance swim 169 lengths 2.4 miles
I planned to swim the equivalent of the Outlaw swim distance, just so that in my head I know that I can cover the distance and This was a good day to try it as I had the time and the pool was open 09:00-16:00. I got to the pool and realised that I'd left my Poolmate at home so would have to count the 168 lengths.
I was also trying a new nose clip to try and avoid the days of sinus congestion and pain that normally follows a swim in the pool. The clip was uncomfortable and made me feel as if my head would explode, still I got on with the swim. counting each time I got to the shallow end, I got to 21 and thought 1/4 of the way and started counting again, at 21 the 2nd time I needed a wee and it was becoming a distraction so I counted another 8 shallow ends, that made 100 lengths so it was a good time to nip out to the loo it was a blessing to remove the nose clip for a few moments. I got back in and thought to myself I will go for 1 mile (36) there and backs as I had lost count a couple of times earlier, as I approached the mile I thought I would keep going to 40 there and backs to make double sure that I'd covered enough distance. 180 lengths of a 25 yd pool equals 2.5 miles. Job done, furthest I've ever swum and in 1 hr 45 min it was quick enough for outlaw. Oh boy my shoulder was sore.

SATURDAY
PLAN 18 mile long slow run
Shoulder was sore and quads tired, but at least my sinuses were ok. Day 10 without a rest and it was showing.
I set off and within 2 miles knew it was not good, I just did not feel comfortable and the wind was strong blowing me around and I was getting soaked, just not nice, I thought "if I can manage 6 miles it will mean I've trained 100 this week, so I focused on 6 and headed of road for a change of scenery. At 7 I promised myself that I would have a little walk, but by then I was on the route of the Ripon tri run and was reliving last July, I couldnt walk now. Again as I approached 10 I thought If I can make 10 then I'll head home, but as I cot to 10 I figured I may as well do a half marathon, and headed up to the back of the golf course because this gave me alot of route options, once 13 was done I decided to head out to Little Harries lane, where I met some Ripon Runners, I said how I was struggling, the conditions were awful, wet, windy and slippery mud. When i left them it must have given me a boost because as I got to the end of the lane it was 16 miles and I thought I've come this far I may as well do the last 2, and they were the best miles of the whole run.
Its not the first time i've had to talk myself through a run and I'm sure that I'll have to do it at Outlaw . When a run is hard like that the tricks I use are; Lie to myself, promising a walk then not doing it and breaking the run down into smaller distances like, just another 3 mile or just to that bridge etc rather than I am going out to run 18 miles which is daunting,. I also try and make myself laugh or smile when negative thoughts enter my head but one of the best tools is to imagine I am in a race where I have felt good and strong and it gets the run done.

SUNDAY
PLAN Rest
Ahh! at last

This weeks totals are
112 miles over 14 hours and 9 workouts, burning 11156 calories

Sunday 12 February 2012

Week 1 Training

Training has not being going great up to now what with major changes to my job and Mums sudden illness creating a new stress for me and eating into my training time. I was not getting along with the Don Fink training plan so I searched for a different plan on the internet then set about swapping days around to meet with my commitments and when I have access to the pool for swimming sessions.
MONDAY
Plan 44 lengths swim.
Finished work early for a change so was feeling calm when I arrived at the pool, there was a lane in so I got going and it was just going good so I kept going till I started to tire. 66 lengths 37 mins.
plan 40 min cycle with 6x20 second sprints.
This looked easy on paper but by the last sprint I was hurting. Did the session on the turbo as as it was freezing and dark outside. Distance 14.13 miles.
TUESDAY
Plan 5 miles easy run.
Finished work late so was late to Junior Ripon Runners and it was very icy so Juniors trained on the cricket pitch. Not much running around for the coaches. Afterwards the conditions had put a lot of the Adults off so I ended up moving up a group and running at the back of Vicky's group, Result 6.3 miles moderate.
WEDNESDAY Plan said rest Day, so rest it was.
THURSDAY
Club Training.
Weather was appalling, rain, Sleet and snow falling onto already frozen ground made for treacherous conditions. Result (much to the amusement of the locals) interval training around the market square. The paths were clearest there. $ miles covered.
FRIDAY
40 min easy bike, Swim Training.
I got up late and decided to do the bike after swimming in the evening. Friday is normally swim training at Ripon Grammar school. It was the last day of half term but a meeting ran on and it became the usual Friday rush to get up to the school in time. I got downstairs ready to go and turned my phone on, there was a message saying that there was no training due to a heating issue. I checked the timetable for the Spa Baths and they had a session from 6PM so I decided to have a brew and go to that. When I got there the strokes came easy and I managed 3200 yards, the furthest I have ever swum to date.
On the way home I went to the shop to get tea, then went home and cooked it. it soon was late so I abandoned the Idea of Turboing.
SATURDAY
Endurance Bike 40 miles.
Never slept well due to chlorine irritating my sinuses. It was minus 6 outside so I decided to turbo 40 miles, I put when Harry Met Sally on and got going. It was not my type of film and was struggling to focus. when it ended I searched on the computer and found T fabulous Baker Brothers, that was more my thing, mmmm! food. Soon I had completed 40 miles and decided to do half of Friday's lost session. Total miles 45
SUNDAY
Endurance run 15 miles
Sinuses still giving me bother so another poor night's sleep. Still the run was not going to do its self. The weather was warmer 2 above zero but I wrapped up warm anyway. soon I was overheating so at 4 miles I headed home for a comfort break and to strip off a couple of layers. That did the trick I found my rhythm and had soon notched up another 10 miles, I still had energy and time so altered my route a bit to increase the miles. Total 17.3 miles. When I got home I had bacon, sausage and mushroom butty then Jumped on the turbo for Friday's lost 20 mins and notched up another 5.5 miles
Total training this week has covered 96 miles in 8 sessions over 10 hours.
All in all a great first week. hope it continues for the rest of the plan

The Background

In April 2006 aged 39 I decided to give up smoking. I was not totally unfit at this point in my life but I was overweight. I walked the dog and was on my feet at work all day but that was it. I had to go to the doctors to get tablets to beat my addiction. In May, sadly the dog took her last walk and fear of becoming more overweight took over. I started going for walks in the early morning before my teenage sons got up. Before long I tried running, one lampost at a time, then two, then, by spring 2007, a whole song on my mp3 player. A friend told me about Race for life, a 5km run for wonen in aid of cancer. I went online and entered. Now I had focus. I completed that and the next year 2008 I did a different Race for Life and The great Yorkshire run a 10km race in Sheffield. It was a busy race, very exciting. I was hooked. I joined Ripon Runners where some members encouraged me to do a 10 mile race that November. I had a new addiction, racing. I am not fast, Im a back of the pack runner but I love it.
2009 saw me run 32 races including 4 half marathons.I was also named Ripon Runners most improved female.
2010 was the year I promised my Husband that I would not do as many races so I did 31 including 2 marathons. He also brought a leaflet home for triathlon and said he would help me train for it.
2011 the year I did 32 races including 3 marathons, an Ultra, a duathlon and an Olympic distance Triathlon. I also set my heart on Outlaw Triathlon an iron distance. I read Tim Gardiners account of his debut Ironman at the first Outlaw in 2010 and knew that I had to give it a go. It was in the school summer holidays so was ideal. Then when they opened for entries for 2012 I was gutted to find it had moved to July, how could I manage it and get back for work on Monday morning. I have never taken the day off work after a race before but think I may need to after an Ironman. I had to wait till the new term in September to ask the Head if it would be possible to take the day off after it. He said yes and a couple of days later my husband surprised me by entering me. The journey had begun.
